Six Afghan policemen traveling in an American-led military convoy were killed by a roadside bomb near Khost in southeast Afghanistan, a police official said. The Taliban claimed responsibility. In Helmand Province, a British soldier was shot dead, the British Defense Ministry said. A Dutch soldier wounded in a suicide bomb attack earlier this week died yesterday. The Taliban claimed to have killed 13 NATO soldiers in Helmand, a rebel spokesman said. Afghan troops backed by American-led forces killed 11 Taliban fighters during a five-hour battle in the southern province of Uruzgan, the military said.

Six Afghan policemen were killed when their convoy was ambushed with machine-gun fire and rockets on a dangerous section of the nation?s main highway from Kandahar to Kabul that is a frequent target of the Taliban, a police official said. Two suicide attackers outfitted in military uniforms killed three policemen and a civilian at the main police station in Khost, said that province?s governor, Arsallah Jamal. Taliban insurgents also attacked a surveying team from a road construction company in southeastern Paktia Province, killing an Afghan and a man from the Philippines, according to police officials cited by Agence France-Presse.

At least nine Tamil Tiger guerrillas and a civilian were killed in fresh violence in Sri Lanka, the military and the rebels said. Government forces shot dead four rebels in the Jaffna peninsula on Monday, the military said. The rebels said they lost five men in a battle with security forces elsewhere. And gunmen shot and killed a local employee of the Danish Refugee Council near the town of Jaffna, for which the military blamed the rebels.
