The military said today that a top leader of the Abu Sayyaf militants had been killed in a gun battle with troops at a rebel jungle camp. Abu Sulaiman was killed Tuesday on the southwestern island of Jolo, said a military spokesman, Maj. Eugene Batara. The militant is one of five leaders of the Abu Sayyaf wanted by the United States for kidnapping three of its citizens and 17 Filipino tourists from the Dos Palmas resort on Palawan island in May 2001. He is believed to have been involved in the worst terrorist attack in the Philippines, the bombing of a passenger ferry off Manila Bay in 2004 that killed at least 200 people. The United States government has offered a $5 million bounty for capture of the five Abu Sayyaf leaders. The United States Embassy said it was awaiting confirmation that the dead man was Abu Sulaiman.
