Reuters: BEIJING - French state-run company Areva has unexpectedly agreed a $5 billion deal to build two nuclear power plants in China weeks after a U.S. rival appeared to have won a competition that dragged on for more than two years.


Exports of services value up 15.4%

The value of total exports of services rose 15.4% to $495.8 billion in 2005 over 2004, the Census & Statistics Department says, adding that the value of total imports of services grew 9% to $264.2 billion.


New mortgage loan approvals dip 6.4%

The value of new residential mortgage loans drawn down in December fell 19.4% to $11.3 billion, the Monetary Authority says. New loans approved also fell 6.4% to $12.5 billion.



January total deposits up 1.6%

January saw a 1.6% rise in total deposits with authorised institutions, with Hong Kong dollar deposits and foreign currency deposits up 2.4% and 0.7%, the Monetary Authority says. Renminbi deposits rose to RMB24.2 billion yuan, up RMB1.5 billion on the previous month.
