St. Lucia, a Caribbean island nation, became the 25th country with diplomatic ties to Taipei instead of Beijing. Liu Jianchao, a Foreign Ministry spokesman in Beijing, denounced St. Lucia for reversing its 1997 decision to recognize Beijing, and said the Chinese ambassador in St. Lucia would lodge a protest. Taiwan has struggled to maintain relations with small countries in Africa, Central America, the Caribbean and the South Pacific, frequently providing them with aid, while larger countries have recognized Beijing as the sole government of all of China, including Taiwan.
