China plans to issue revised rules to curb speculation and the lucrative trade in grave plots, the state-run newspaper China Daily reported. Traditional preferences for graves, instead of smaller areas for urns carrying ashes, has resulted in soaring prices, it said. It said in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province, the average price of a grave in a public cemetery was about $1,000 per square yard, while the average house price was about $500 per square yard. The revised rules will say that public cemeteries can sell grave sites only to customers who produce a death certificate, or face a fine of up to $64,000. The traditional view that a person can have a peaceful afterlife only if buried in a grave is still widely accepted in China.
