Fri, 09 Mar 2007 22:09:25 EDT | New York Times

A Muslim association has barred five Australian imams from speaking to the news media in an attempt to stop local clerics from inflaming anti-Muslim sentiments, the newspaper The Australian reported. The affected imams, all based at the Lakemba mosque in Sydney, the largest in Australia, include Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali, who last year compared women who dressed without headscarves to ?uncovered meat? and said they were inviting sexual assault. The newspaper report said the association, the Lebanese Muslim Association, had sent a letter to the imams demanding they ?pause and desist? from talking to the news media, especially Arabic-speaking outlets. It warned the imams that they could lose their positions as spiritual leaders at the mosque if they defied the association. The association?s president, Tom Zreika, told the newspaper that the letter had been issued to end ?perceived un-Australian viewpoints given by some clerics.?.
